David Donald Duncan Sr.,79, passed away on Thursday, August 10th 2017. He was born on January 16th, 1938, son of the late Donald Duncan and Corrinne (LaMontagne) Duncan. David proudly served our country in the United States Army. He was also a retired President of Teamsters Local 404. He is predeceased by his 1st wife and love of his life, Anna Leona (Lander) Duncan, and his 2nd wife Laura (Marchotti) Brereton Duncan. David is survived by his sons Danny Duncan and his spouse Daniel Beyer of Colombia, MD, David Duncan Jr. and his wife Debra of Hampden, MA; his daughter Donna Daviau and her husband Edmund of Wilbraham; his brother Alan Duncan of Somers, CT; and his grandchildren; Melisa Gorski, Christine Duncan, Karen Duncan, Joanne Daviau and Duncan Daviau, as well as great grandchildren; McKenzie Gorski, Sylas Gorski, Lawrence Duncan and Keira LeClair. Along with his parents, David was predeceased by his sister Corinne Daignault. Funeral services for David will be held on Monday, August 14th at 10:45am at Byron Keenan Funeral Home, 1858 Allen St, Springfield followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 12 noon at St. Cecilia’s Church in Wilbraham. Rites of Committal with military honors will be held in Hillcrest Park Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, August 13th from 2-5pm at the funeral home. 

In His Own Words…

Born January 16, 1938 to Donald and Corinne Duncan in Springfield, Massachusetts.  He attended local schools, enlisting in the United States Army in January 1955.  He completed basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey and advanced Tank Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky.  Upon completion he was assigned to Tank Company, 5^th Regimental Combat Team in Fort Lewis, Washington.  In 1956 he was transferred to D Company, 57^th Medium Tank Battalion in Europe attaining the rank of E-5 as Tank Commander.  Discharged in January 1958, David married his childhood sweetheart, Anna Lander which resulted in 3 children, David Jr, Danny and Donna.  Parishioners of Holy Cross Church David coached little league baseball and ice hockey.  For 4 years Dave worked at Hamilton Standard in Windsor Locks as a lead set-up man before being recalled by the Army and assigned to Fort Campbell, Kentucky teaching Tank Gunnery during the Cuban Crisis.  Shortly after returning to Hamilton, Dave resigned to join the Teamsters Union and was a driver for W.L. Mead and four years later for Helms Express.  Becoming politically active in the locals affairs he ran for office in 1978 and was elected Trustee finishing as High Vote Getter in a field of nine.  In 1980 her ran for Vice President and Business Agent and was elected by a 3 to 1 margin.  From 1980 to 1985 he represented Truck Drivers, Dock Workers, Dialysis Nurses, Factory Workers, Police Departments and various trades.  In 1988, Dave decided to run for the top spot  and once again beat his opponents by a 3 to 1 margin.

While President, he became chairman of the New England Freight Committee consisting of Seven New England States, Co-chairman of the New England Joint Area Committee (Arbitration) Trustee to Joint Council 10-64 in Boston as representative to Eastern conference of teamsters in Washington, DC.

Locally, as well as his position with Local 404 in Springfield her served as Labor Representative Pioneer Valley United Way and was Executive Vice-President to the Pioneer Valley Labor Council.

Prior to his retirement in January 1998 Dave’s last two 3 year terms of office were unopposed, the first time in the Locals 98 year history.
