Donald M. Mahoney, 85, of Springfield, passed away Tuesday, June 27, 2017 with his family by his side. Born in Springfield on November 28, 1931 he was the son of the late Thomas F. and Theresa (O’Brien) Mahoney. Donald proudly served as Private First Class in the United States Army during the Korean War, receiving a Bronze Star Medal. He worked as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Springfield for 42 years until his retirement. Don loved trips to the casino and was an avid Red Sox fan. Along with coaching baseball and basketball for both of his son’s teams when they were growing up he additionally volunteered at Bingo for the Our Lady of Sacred Heart parish. Don leaves his loving wife of 59 years, Marlene L. (McDonald) Mahoney; his two sons, Thomas Mahoney and Daniel Mahoney; his four grandchildren whom he adored, Marc, Meghan, Bryan, and Scott Mahoney; and his cousin Mary Theresa Zwicker of Washington State. A calling hour will be held on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 from 8-8:45 am with a funeral home service at 8:45 am at Byron Keenan Funeral Home, 1858 Allen St, Springfield. Rites of Committal with military honors will be held at 10 am at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main St, Agawam.
