Donald M. Safford, 87, of Hampden, passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Donald was born in Springfield MA on February 16, 1930, the son of the late Julius and Kathleen (Tallman) Safford Gates. He was a graduate of Springfield Technical High School, Class of 1947. He proudly served our country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Donald was a professional photographer and he owned and operated Mercury Studio Inc., in Hampden for fifty-five years. He was a member of the Hampden Federated Church. Donald is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-six years Patricia (Ligman) Safford of Hampden, and three children Steve Safford of Palmer, MA and Donald Safford, Jr. of Palm Bay, FL and Julie Fontaine of Hampden, MA and he leaves three devoted grandchildren Bryan Safford, Katrina Safford and Dylan Fontaine and a great-grandson Trevor Merceri. Family and friends will honor and remember Donald on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at a gathering from 4p.m-6p.m at the Byron Keenan Funeral Home and Cremation Tribute Center, 1858 Allen Street, Springfield, MA 01118, Followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 6p.m. Burial will be private.
