Aunt Helen had a full and interesting life…she was a spotter during WWII and learned every detail of both domestic and foreign aircraft. Before most women were in the workforce, she was employed at Monsanto, taking on increasing responsibilities throughout her 30 years. Always athletic, Helen was an avid and talented golfer…back when women wore skirts and cardigan sweaters on the golf course. With Aunt Betty, she traveled the world independently, making friends and lifelong pen pals along the way. As a serious and talented photographer, she would create an impressive library of photo albums and slide shows of their adventures. None of us were forgotten on our birthdays or holidays...each time I visited, she would proudly pull out photos of her vast extended network of friends and family, remembering names, where they lived, ages, who they married, what they did for a living and how many children they had…all this done with love and pride. In retirement, she became a docent at the museum and when getting around was more difficult, she worked in their gift shop. Very involved in St. Patrick’s Church, she was a lifelong, faithful congregant, who gave of her time to help others. Those of us who still remember Benton Place…know the moniker “Ross Manor” began there. The Benton Place house was built by her Scottish, stonecutter father; it was where Helen and all her siblings were born in the upstairs front bedroom. A house Aunt Betty and Aunt Helen opened to all…not just on Christmas night, but all year round for most every family celebration. Picnics in their backyard were always grand affairs… it was such fun to see all the relatives gathered together…. a tradition they continued when moving to Mary Coburn Road.
Now we are left with just memories of an amazing woman…do cherish them, I know I will.
