Lawrence “Larry” Smith, 91 of Hampden, passed away at home on Tuesday, May 30, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Larry was born in Claremont, N.H., on March 23, 1926, the son of the late Freeman and Juliette (Patten) Smith. Larry proudly served our country in World War II in the United States Army Air Corps and later Air Force. He was educated in the East Longmeadow School System. He was a member of the Hampden Federated Church. Larry worked as Distribution Manager for Friendly’s Ice Cream Corporation and retired after thirty years of service. Prior to entering the military he worked for the Springfield Armory. An avid amateur radio operator (K1ILZ), he was a member and officer of the Amateur Radio Relay League.  He was also a member of the National Clock and Watch Association and served on the Hampden Zoning Board of Appeals.  In addition to his parents he was also predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Patricia (Gagnier) Smith, in 2007 and three brothers Roger, Arthur and Kenneth Smith. He is survived by his three devoted children Sheila Bowen and her husband Michael of Hilltown, PA., James “Jim” Smith and his wife Antonietta “Bee” of Hampden, and David Smith and his wife Jennifer Peak – Smith of Wilbraham and nine adored grandchildren Michael, Heidi and her husband Nathan, Jeffrey, Erik, David Jr., and his wife Bethany, Christopher, Kyle, Corey and Kayla and three great-grandchildren Madisyn, Curtis and Aislyn and his beloved friend Lois Pixley of Hampden.  His funeral will be held on Saturday June 3rd at 11:00AM at the Byron Keenan Funeral Home and Cremation & Tribute Center, 1858 Allen Street in Springfield.  Burial with military honors will follow in the Old Cemetery in Hampden.  Calling hours will precede the Funeral from 9:00AM to 11:00AM at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, American Cancer Society, or the Juvenile Diabetes Association.
