Shirley B. (Whitney) Munro, 96, a lifelong resident of the of the Sixteen Acres neighborhood of Springfield passed away on  Tuesday, February 6, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. Shirley was born on April 20, 1921 in Springfield, the daughter of the late S. Roy and Mary E. (Gage) Whitney. Shirley was a graduate of Classical High School, class of 1939. Shirley’s secretarial career included executive secretary of Gasland in Springfield and Champion Packaging in Chicopee along with transportation secretary at the Pioneer Valley Regional Planning Commission in West Springfield. She was a volunteer mentor in the Springfield Elementary School system. Shirley loved being active in the East Longmeadow community theater. She was a longtime member of the Wachogue Congregational Church in Springfield, serving on many boards over the years.  Shirley was also a member of the Mayflower Senior Center for many years. She enjoyed tap dancing in the Springfield Senior Classics. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her former husband Robert Munro; and her two sisters, Barbara Wager and Roma Armstong. Shirley is survived by her two devoted children Pamela Collins and her husband Jack of West Springfield and Duncan Munro of Hayes, VA; her five adored grandchildren, Brett Collins, Christina Collins and her wife Andrea, Seth Collins and his fiancé Dr. Lydia Lormand, Alexander Munro and his wife Kylie, and Spencer Munro; and three great-grandchildren, Arran, Mia, Cygan. The Munro family would like to thank all of the staff on Unit 3 at the Wingate West Springfield nursing home. They would also like thank the Beacon Hospice Staff for their compassion and care given to Shirley. Family and friends will gather and remember Shirley on Friday, February 9, 2018 from 10a.m-11a.m., at the Byron Keenan Funeral Home and Cremation Tribute Center, 1858 Allen Street, Springfield, MA, 01118; followed by a Life Celebration Service at 11a.m. Burial will be private.   Donations may be made to the Dakin Humane Society, 171 Union Street, Springfield, MA, 01105 or the Alzheimer’s Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 309 Waverley Oaks Road, Waltham, MA 02452.
