Wanda (Szpotowski) Kopec, 88, of Springfield, a former longtime resident of East Longmeadow, died early Friday morning, February 24, 2017 at Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing in Springfield. She was born and educated in Acushnet, MA a daughter of the late Frank and Apolonia (Janusz) Szpotowski and was a graduate of the former Classical High School in Springfield. Wanda was employed with the former Dow Jones & Company in Chicopee for over twenty five years until her retirement in 1999. She was a longtime communicant of St. Patrick’s Church in Springfield, as well an active member of the East Longmeadow Senior Citizens Friendship Club where she and her late devoted husband and best friend of 68 years, John J. Kopec were named its former King and Queen. She leaves one loving daughter, Ann Marie Gilmore and her husband Brian of Monson; five cherished grandchildren, Michelle Kopec, Michael Kopec, Robert Kopec and his wife Melissa, Edward J. Kopec, Jr. and his wife Sarah, and Samantha Gilmore; six great-grandchildren, Kaitlynn, Kallie, Amelia and Autumn Kopec, Cooper Telenko and Clara Anderson; as well as several nieces and nephews. Wanda was predeceased by her son, Edward J. Kopec, Sr., in 2010 as well as her four sisters, Adele Benz, Veronica Wagner, Rose Hedstrom and Joanne Bell; and her four brothers, Daniel, Theodore, Ignus and John Szpotowski. Relatives and friends are welcome to call on Monday evening, February 27th from 4:30 – 6:30 PM at the Byron Keenan Funeral Home & Cremation Tribute Center, 1858 Allen St., Springfield. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 28th beginning at 8:15 AM at the Byron Keenan Funeral Home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM in St. Patrick’s Church, 1900 Allen St., both in Springfield, Rites of Committal to conclude at 11:00 AM the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main St., Agawam. In lieu of flowers contributions in Wanda’s memory may be directed to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.
