Willard Flynn

Willard J. “Widdy” Flynn, 88, of Hampden, passed away on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at Wingate of Hampden. Woody, as he was known to many, lived a life full of treasured moments with his family and many dear friends. He was a talented musician who played the organ for thirty years at the Brigham Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Ludlow, as well as the former Main Street Masonic Temple located on State Street in Springfield. He and Jim especially enjoyed afternoon lunches at Koffee Tyme restaurant in East Longmeadow. He was also an avid ham radio enthusiast. Willard was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on August 12, 1928, the son of the late Daniel M. and Faye (Willis) Flynn and was a graduate of Classical High School Class of 1946. He continued his education receiving an undergraduate degree and later his Master’s degree in Engineering from UMass in Amherst. Willard proudly served his country attaining the rank of Corporal with the United States Army during the Korean War and received his honorable discharge on July 2, 1953. He was the recipient of several awards and citations including Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars and the Commendation Ribbon with Medal Pendant. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his siblings, John Flynn and Kathleen Flynn. He is survived by his partner and best friend of thirty-seven years, James McDarby of Hampden; his sister-in-law, Sheila Flynn of Hampden; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins of both the Flynn and McDarby families. The family would like to thank the staff at the Wernick Adult Day Care Center and especially the supervisor, Darlene Francis for all of their compassionate care and loving support extended to Woody and his family during his illness. Family and friends will honor and remember Woody on Thursday, July 13, 2017 from 4-6 p.m. at the Byron Keenan Funeral Home and Cremation Tribute Center, 1858 Allen Street, Springfield, MA, 01118, followed by a Life Celebration Service at 6p.m. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wernick Adult Day Care Center.
