Barbara Rose (Hanson) Schermerhorn

Barbara Rose (Hanson) Schermerhorn, 83, of Springfield, formerly of Monson, passed away Saturday morning, September 21, 2019 in the comfort of her daughter’s Monson home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born and educated in Springfield, a daughter of the late Carl E. and Rose B. (Galanek) Hanson and was a graduate of the former Westfield State Teachers College where she earned her BA degree in Early Education. Barbara began teaching in the Town of Wilbraham School system for several years before she began raising her family. Barbara was active member of Foster Memorial Church in Springfield MA. Barbara also was a church-school teacher at Wilbraham United Church, and sang with the choir at Monson First Church. Barbara always found happiness and laughter in everyday life. She was probably the world’s biggest Elvis Presley fan, having seen him in concert twice and visiting Graceland with her sister. She also shared her love of Star Trek with many of her family members. Barbara looked forward to vacations at the beach with her family which had been a tradition for 18 years. Her favorite pastimes were knitting and crocheting, reading, puzzles of all kinds, and spending time with her family at the many holiday and birthday gatherings which we hold so dear in our hearts. She leaves three loving children, Alice B. Kempf and her husband Ronald of Monson, Carol J. Lorion and her husband Rich of Spencer, and Neal Y. Schermerhorn, Jr. of Ware; her sister, Elizabeth Rhoads of Pearl, Mississippi; two grandchildren; Melissa R. Vanderburgh and Karla F. Wilder; nine great grandchildren, Avery, Sebastian, Naomi, Damian and Xavier Vanderburgh, Phoebe and Bailey Babineau, and Oscar and Angelica Medina; one great-great grandson, Perseus Babineau (PJ); nine nieces and nephews; Chuck, Janice, Bill and Bob Rhoads, Honey, Van and Eric Schermerhorn, Holly Daly and Heidi Price. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 12th at 11:00 AM at Foster Memorial Church, 1791 Wilbraham Road, in Springfield. Burial will be private and there will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Barbara’s name may be directed to Foster Memorial Church, 1791 Wilbraham Rd., Springfield, MA 01119.
