Tribute

Christopher G. Magee passed away surrounded by his family of friends at home in East Longmeadow on June 10, 2022.   Forever and affectionately known only as “Fibber” to all, Chris valiantly and graciously battled brain cancer until his passing.

Born and raised in East Longmeadow, Chris was the only child of the late Gerard Francis and Noreen (O’Meara) Magee.  A 1982 graduate of East Longmeadow High School, Fibber excelled at football, ice hockey, and baseball; yet his real passion was fast cars and his Skylark left tracks all over town.   Chris attended the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) and graduated in 1987 with a degree in Sociology. While at UMass, Chris played football and was a fraternity brother at Pi Kappa Alpha- Theta Mu Chapter where he was prominent contributor to social services and extracurricular activities.

Following graduation and for most of his working life, Fibber resided on Martha’s Vineyard for over 30 years where he owned and operated several successful businesses such as Bay State Towing & Recovery and MV Paving and Landscape Co.  Chris’ good nature was enjoyed by the many dogs who graced the front seat of his tow truck for years – including his adored Abby and KEMOsabe.

Fibber had a variety of interests; yet his passion for auto racing was by far his favorite.  For many years, he raced the local oval tracks of New England in Street Stock and then Pro-Stock levels – earning the checkered flag several times. It was the racing at Seekonk & Thomson Speedways and attendance at stock car races that brought the widest giggling grin to his face.

Fibber was a lifelong fan of all Boston sports teams and spent plenty of days and nights rooting on the New England Patriots at Foxboro after passing on his usual “pre-game tips” to win. In his last days – he attended Patriots, Bruins, Celtics, and Springfield Thunderbirds games.  On these trips – it was customary to stop off and enjoy a Ribber Sandwich at roadside convenience stores.

Over the last few months of life, Chris enjoyed the friendship and caretaking from many of his lifelong friends.  He will be deeply missed by this family of friends – including the O’Brien/Gelinas family who enjoyed his presence at family events and gatherings.  Their family home became a second home for Fibber … so much so that the family dog Zoe took a particular liking to Chris and lapped up his attention.  Special thanks and heartfelt appreciation are extended to those caregivers who selflessly and compassionately worked to make Chris’ last days filled with comfort, grace, and peace.
