Dr. George Moraitis

Tribute

Dr. George Moraitis, of East Longmeadow and formerly of Glencoe, Illinois, passed away on May 9, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. George was born in Athens, Greece, on May 16, 1926, the son of the late Dimitri and Dimitra Moraitis. He endured the German occupation of WWII and a near fatal bout of tuberculosis as a teenager.  He graduated from medical school, served in the Greek army and then married the love of his life, Christine. They immigrated to the United States in 1956, embracing their newfound country with enthusiasm. George was a philosophic thinker whose warmth and infectious laughter touched those around him. He was a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst for 40 years, was on the faculty of Northwestern University Medical School, teaching and supervising psychanalysts at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, and later the Berkshire Psychoanalytic Institute. He was the author of several professional publications and coeditor of psychanalytic studies of biography. George was a wonderful husband and father who loved the arts, adventure and travel. He was predeceased by his wife Christine (Sgouropoulos) Moraitis in 2011 and a sister Ersi Moraitis.  George is survived by his two devoted sons Dimitri Moraitis of Encinitas, CA, and Dr. Philip Moraitis and his wife Ann Marie of Wilbraham and three adored grandchildren Ellen, Anna and Julia. He cherished his many deep friendships throughout his life. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to those who cared for him. A gathering will be held on Sunday, May 13, 2018 from 12noon -3 PM at the Byron Keenan Funeral Home, 1858 Allen Street, Springfield, MA, 01118. Dr. Moraitis funeral will be held on Monday, May 14, 2018 at 10 AM at St. Luke’s Greek Orthodox Church, 400 Prospect Street, East Longmeadow, MA. Burial will conclude in the Longmeadow Cemetery, Williams Street in Longmeadow.
