E. Joan (Berry) Flagg, 87, passed away on Saturday, May 19, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Springfield on November 3, 1930, a daughter of the late Robert T. and Eleanor (Livermore) Berry. Joan attended Classical High School and excelled as a student/athlete in multiple sports through her four years. After High School, Joan enrolled into Sargent College/Boston University where she studied Physical Education. Upon Graduation, she began her career as a Physical Education Teacher in Abington Massachusetts. After two years of teaching in Abington, Joan took a leave of absence, to raise her 3 children. Joan returned to teaching, in the Springfield Public Schools, at M. Marcus Kiley Middle School. She taught there for 24 years, retiring in 1994. She loved the teachers she taught with in the Springfield Schools and developed many friendships. When Joan was not working, she enjoyed both, playing and watching sports, especially watching her Boston Red Sox. She was such an avid fan. Above all, Joan loved her family. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Monte R. Flagg, Jr. in 1991 and her brother, Robert B. Berry in 2007. Joan leaves her loving children, Lincoln Flagg and his partner, Sonja Davis of Raleigh, NC, Heather Henry and her husband Robert of Chocowinity, NC, and Carl Flagg and his partner Donna Regan, of Wales, MA; her sister, Margie Guild and her husband Curt of Micco, FL; sister-in-law, Cathy Berry of Southwick, MA; her four grandchildren, Danielle Beale and her husband Garison of Nevis, West Indies, Robert Henry Jr. and his partner Chanel Meyers of Honolulu, HI, Melissa Jubinville of Raleigh, NC, and Greg Jubinville and his wife Stephanie of Las Vegas, NV; and two great grandchildren, Parker and Pearson Beale. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, May 25, 2018 at 12noon at Byron Keenan Funeral Home, 1858 Allen St. followed by burial in Hillcrest Park Cemetery, both Springfield.
