Tribute

Eugenia H. Zaiken, lovingly known by all as “Babci”, of Springfield, passed away on Friday, September 4, 2020 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Eugenia was born in Adams, MA., on October 9, 1922 the daughter of the late Peter and Helen (Szpila) Kurpaska. She was a graduate of Adams High School. Eugenia was a longtime parishioner of Holy Cross Church in Springfield. She enjoyed being outside and working in her yard, baking, but most of all loved spending time with her family.  Her family attributes her long life to her endless energy, kindness, and prayer.  When asked, she attributed her long life to “eating dessert”. In addition to her parents she was also predeceased by her beloved husband Stephen Zaiken in 1967, brothers Casimer Kurpaska, Stephen Kurpaska, Stanley S. Kurpaska, Stanley P. Kurpaska, Anthony Kurpaska, and sisters Helen Mazzoli, Terry Viani, and Frances Socha. She is survived by her four children James S. Zaiken and his wife Paula of Winchester, MA., Linda F. Mikkelsen and her husband Ross of Richmond, VA., Gary J. Zaiken and his wife Judy of East Longmeadow and Marian J. McPartlin and her husband Michael of North Andover, MA. She also leaves her seven grandchildren Nikolaus Zaiken and his wife Caitlin, Alexander Zaiken, Kathryn Mikkelsen, Alexandra Mikkelsen, Carolyn Livingston and her husband Taylor, Stephen McPartlin and Joseph McPartlin; nieces and nephews. A private service at Holy Cross Church and burial at St. Michael’s Cemetery was held on Wednesday, September 9. All are asked to remember Babci by expressing an act of kindness to another.
