Tribute

Evelyn Eleanor Hogan was born on April 25, 1920 at home in NYC to Mary M. (Rowe) and Timothy F. Hogan and was welcomed by her six siblings. Her family moved to South Ozone Park, Queens, NY. She attended Catholic Schools through High School, graduating in 1938. She then attended Mary Immaculate Hospital School of Nursing, graduating as an RN in 1940. After graduation, she worked at this hospital as the Nursing Supervisor in the Newborn Nursery. She met her future husband, John F. Byrne, on a “blind date” in 1943 when he was “on leave” from the Navy. They married on August 7, 1943 in South Ozone Park and went on a short Honeymoon to Norwich, NY for Evelyn to meet his family. He was discharged from the Navy in December 1945 and they moved to Norwich, NY to find employment. Once employment was found, they moved to Albany, NY, where they lived until 1949. Portland, ME was the next stop where John started his employment with Royal Typewriter as Manager. The final move was to Springfield, MA, in 1952. By this time, the family had grown. It now included Mary Anne (1945); Patricia (1946); John Francis, Jr. (1948); & James Patrick (1950). The family lived on Perkins Street until 1960 when Kathleen Marie was born and the house was bursting at the seams! Their last move as a family was to South Branch Parkway. Evelyn received her Associates Degree from STCC and began working nights at Springfield Municipal Hospital and then for the Springfield School Dept. John died in 1971, so she and Kathleen moved to a smaller home. Evelyn then went to work as a nurse for Goodwill and worked there until she was 80 in 2000. She would have stayed longer, but computers were introduced, and that was the last straw! Evelyn was predeceased by both her parents in 1960 and all six of her siblings; her son, John F. Byrne Jr. in 1995; and her daughter, Patricia in 2005. She leaves three children, Mary Anne Duda and husband Alec, James P. Byrne and wife Jill, and Kathleen Adams; her son-in-law, Alan Fletcher; her grandchildren, Carolyn Campbell and husband Todd, Christine Folger and husband Shawn, Cynthia Duncan and husband Jeremy, Kevin Duda, John F. Byrne 3rd and wife Emily, Heather Byrne, Shannon Lemonde, Jackie Perkins, Joseph Perkins, and Allie Wyland; and 10 great grandchildren.  Evelyn spent her last years at The Wellington of Springfield and recently was transferred to Heritage Hall East in Agawam where she died April 19, 2023. A private service will be held at the Byron Keenan Funeral Home of Springfield.
