Tribute

Francis J. DeSantis, 88, of Sixteen Acres in Springfield, passed away May 6, 2020 in Bradenton, FL. Son of the late William P. and Katherine A. (Tosi) DeSantis, Fran was born in Worcester, MA on July 13, 1931. Enlisting in the US Air Force at the age of 17, he served in the Korean War as a Communications Specialist, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. After his military service, Fran spent his life educating and enriching the lives of others; as an elementary school teacher in Springfield, a guidance counselor in East Longmeadow and the Director of Guidance for Holyoke schools. He also helped prisoners continue their education as an Educational Psychologist for the Connecticut Prison System. Fran was a proud member of the Brigham Lodge of Masons in Ludlow, the Melha Shriners, Elks Lodge #61, and the CEA of CT. In retirement, Fran was able to indulge his passion for golf while continuing to learn new things. While he enjoyed traveling, he also loved spending time with family and friends at his homes in Massachusetts, Florida, and Maine. Winning or losing while playing card games around the table, Fran will always be remembered for his big smile, great sense of humor, and undeniable sportsmanship. Predeceased by his brother William, he is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Virginia (Morey) DeSantis of Springfield; a devoted daughter, Kathleen McBride and her husband Jim of Springfield; and a son, David DeSantis and his wife Heidi of Ludlow.

Fran was loved dearly by his six grandchildren: Steven DeSantis of Springfield; Kevin DeSantis of Sunnyvale, CA; David McCutchen of Feeding Hills; Rachel McCutchen of Hampden; and Joshua and Jacob DeSantis of Ludlow. Fran also leaves behind his two great-granddaughters, Guiliana and Madelyn DeSantis of Springfield. Family and friends will gather on Thursday, May 14, 2020 from 10-11a.m. at the Byron Keenan Funeral Home and Cremation Tribute Center, 1858 Allen Street, Springfield. A private service and burial will take place at a later date in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.
