Frederick T. Lofgren, age 95, died December 10, 2019 at the Soldiers Home in Holyoke, MA. He was born in Springfield, on September 10, 1924, the son of the late Sven E. and Maude L. (Phelps) Lofgren and was a resident of East Longmeadow since 1963. Previously he lived in Longmeadow, MA and Enfield, CT. He was married 59 years to his wife, former Dorothy L. Johnson and is survived by his daughter, Linda E. (Norman) Hamel of Monson, two grandchildren, Adam and Lea Hamel and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by son, Curtis A. Lofgren in 2009 and daughter, Diana L. Lofgren in 1976, sisters Louise E. Swain of Tampa, FL, and Eleanor J. Randall of El Monte, CA and brother, Edward E. Lofgren of Nashville, TN. He was a graduate of Springfield Technical High School in 1943. Served over two years in the 8th Army Air Force, B-24 squadron, as flight engineer and turret gunner with missions over Rhineland, Germany and the Ardennes terrain in central Europe and southern France in World War II receiving the Air Medal (two oak leaf clusters), theater ribbon (four battle stars and American Theater Campaign Ribbon) and was discharged as T/Sgt in 1945. Later he graduated from New York Technical Institute of New Jersey and University of Hartford formerly Ward’s School of Electronics. Fred was an electronics technician for Hamilton Standard (United Technologies) for 35 years retiring in 1987. Known as Mr. Fix-it, he could fix anything. He was a member of the First Congregational Church and was head usher for twenty years, offering trustee and in the men’s work crew. Visiting hours are Sunday, December 15, at Byron Keenan Funeral Home from 1 to 3 p.m. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, December 16 at the First Congregational Church, Somers Road in East Longmeadow. Burial will be in Hillcrest Park Cemetery, Springfield. Memorial donations to First Congregational Church.
