Henry F. Gagnon, Sr., 100, passed away peacefully at home on July 16th. He was born in Fitchburg on February 13, 1919, the son of the late John and Flora (Cote) Gagnon. Henry was a teacher at Van Sickle Junior High School in Springfield, where he taught for 27 years before retiring. He attended Notre Dame Elementary School in Easthampton, and graduated from the former St. Michael’s High School in Northampton. Henry received a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Montreal. He also attended St. Viator’s College in Canada, where he and three other colleagues built a pipe organ for the chapel there. He served as the organist and choir director of the former St. Joseph’s Church in Springfield for 30 years. Henry’s wife, Frances M. (Regnier) Gagnon, passed away in 2001. He leaves his son, Henry F. Gagnon, Jr. and his wife Mary Ellen of Hampden; his two granddaughters, Molly Anne and Katherine Mary Gagnon; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, Henry was predeceased by his two brothers, Leo H. Gagnon and Francis J. Gagnon, Sr. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at 11am in St. Mary’s Church, Hampden with Rites of Committal to follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Springfield. Calling hours will precede the service from 8:45am – 10:15am at Byron Keenan Funeral Home, Springfield. Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
