James J. Ruell Jr., 96, of Springfield, passed away peacefully on Wednesday June 24, 2020, at Mercy Medical Center. Jim was a gentle, thoughtful and kind father, papa, and friend. He was sustained by an unwavering trust in God’s providence. Jim was born in Indian Orchard, the son of his adored mother Amanda and father James J. Ruell Sr. Jim proudly served our country in the Army during World War II. He was a devoted communicant of St. Patrick’s Church in Springfield. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his best friend and love of his life Phyllis M. (Sullivan) Ruell. Jim and Phyllis had been married for 70 years. He leaves his daughter and friend Ann McPherson of Sandwich MA and her husband Paul who was like a son to Jim. He leaves three loving and devoted grandchildren Kelly Westbrooks and her husband Russell of Springfield, Colin McPherson of Washington D.C., and Caitlin McPherson of Buzzards Bay MA., two treasured great-grandchildren Emma and Nicholas Westbrooks. Jim also leaves many friends, neighbors and his 4 o’clock Mass family. Your many kindnesses brought Jim great joy, and we are forever grateful. We his family are heartbroken at his passing but we are comforted in our faith and know that Jim is in the arms of his Savior. The world has truly been diminished by his passing, a great light has gone out. We can never repay Jim for all the sacrifices he made for us. Our debt to him is immeasurable as is our love. Because of covid19 Jim’s funeral will be held privately at St. Patrick’s Church in Springfield. Burial will also be private in Baptist Village Cemetery in East Longmeadow.
