Janet D. Evans, 74, of Springfield, formerly of New York, passed away on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Baystate Medical Center. Born in Granville County, NC she was a daughter of the late George and Johnnie Ruth (Taborne) Evans. Janet graduated from Mary Potter School in Oxford, NC and moved to New York where worked as a social worker for over 20 years. After retiring, Janet moved to Springfield, MA to be closer to her brother. She worked for the Springfield voting polls for several years. Janet enjoyed volunteer work and travelling. She also enjoyed playing cards every Friday night and the company of her “yoga sisters” every Thursday at the Cancer House of Hope- She will be dearly missed by all “her sisters”;. Janet leaves her two daughters, Kelly Roberts and her husband Nate of Norlina, NC and Denise Palmer and her husband Lynn of Newport News, VA; her son, Danny Cross and his wife Pamela of Oxford, NC; brothers, James Evans and his wife Sylvia of Springfield, George Evans and his wife Tina of Durham, NC, and Ricky Evans and his wife Sandy of Hillsborough, NC; sisters, Clara Jean Evans ,Sharen Cheetam and her husband Joel, Annette Rogers , and Tammy Evans all of Oxford, NC; 8 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, Janet was predeceased by her siblings, Bill, Tommy, and Vincent Evans, and Dalleen Thorb. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 11, 2018 at 11am directly at St. Michael’s Cathedral Church 260 State St, Springfield, MA 01103. There are no calling hours.
