John Dakers, Jr., of the Sixteen Acres area of Springfield, passed away on Saturday evening at his home surrounded by his loving family. John led a good life full of treasured moments with his family. He was born in Springfield on June 8, 1928, the son of the late Scottish immigrants John Sr. and Margret (Nicol). John was a graduate of Trade High School, Class of 1945. He was a Union Electrician for sixty years and retired in 1990. He also was a longtime member of the IBEW- local 7 in Springfield. He was a member of the Melha Shrine as well as of the Masonic Lodge of Wilbraham. John was a charter member of the Springfield Symphony Chorus. He was a member of Hope Congregational Church and was very involved with the choir for many years. Later he became a member at Foster Memorial Church in Springfield. He was a member of the Scottish rite and was extremely proud of his Scottish heritage. John was a volunteer for the Sixteen Acres Youth Soccer and he was known for handing out orange slices to the kids during half time. John took great pride in making his own outdoor “Dakers Hockey Rink” for all of the children in the neighborhood to enjoy. He often said that he would continue to do it for another 70 years as long as someone was enjoying themselves. In addition to his parents he is also predeceased by a daughter Judy Dakers. He is survived by his beloved wife of seventy years of marriage June (Vantine) Dakers of Springfield, three devoted children Sandra Curry and her husband David of Cape Elizabeth, ME, J. David Dakers of Bozrah, CT., and Gary Dakers and his wife Deborah Sbraccia – Dakers of Longmeadow and he leaves five cherished grandchildren Rebecca Aupperlee and her husband Phil, Heather Curry, Taylor Dakers, Makenze Dakers and Ian Dakers and a great-granddaughter Avery Hope Aupperlee. Family and friends will honor and remember John on Thursday, October 26, 2017 from 10a.m-11a.m. at the Byron Keenan Funeral Home and Cremation Tribute Center, 1858 Allen Street, Springfield, MA 01118, followed by a Life Celebration Service at 11a.m. Burial will be private.
