John D. “Jack” Nehmer of East Longmeadow, 85, passed away early Thursday morning, June 4, 2020 after a very brief illness. Born in Boston, the son of the late Irving and Mary (McLaughlin) Nehmer. He was raised and educated in Springfield, a graduate of Cathedral High School, Monson Academy and attended AIC. After being honorably discharged from the United States Army, Jack began a career in the insurance industry where he worked until his retirement. Jack was an accomplished athlete throughout his school years, a basketball standout who proudly lead the 1954 Monson Academy team to a New England Championship. In his later years, golf replaced basketball as his passion. He was a current and long-time member of the Country Club of Wilbraham where he enjoyed golfing with his many friends. He was extremely proud of his three holes-in-one. Jack was a communicant of St. Michael’s Parish in East Longmeadow. Jack is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Joan (Colesano) Nehmer; and leaves three loving children, Michael and his wife Barbara of Wilbraham, Lisa Cronin and her husband Michael of Hampden, and Jeffrey of East Longmeadow; his four cherished granddaughters, Erin and Megan Nehmer and Nicole and Michaela Cronin, who brought him great joy. Jack also leaves his sister-in-law, Jean Methe as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Jack was predeceased by his six siblings. If you were lucky enough to be one of Jack’s friends, and he had many, you know how special he was and how much he will be missed. A graveside service and Military Honors will take place on Tuesday morning, June 9th at 10:30 AM at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 421 Tinkham Road, in Springfield. All are welcome but social distancing and a mask will be required. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael's Church in East Longmeadow, at a later date.
