Kathleen Helen Cowles, 86, a lifelong resident of Springfield, passed away on May 10, 2023 in the comfort of her home. She was born and educated in Springfield, a daughter of the late Walter E. and Anna (Swords) Cowles and was a graduate of Cathedral High School Class of 1953. Kathleen continued her education attending Our Lady of the Elms College where she received her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics’ Class of 1957.
She was employed for over 24-years at the University of Mass as the Assistant Director of the Computing Center and Director of Academic Counseling until her retirement in 1988. Kathleen also served as a consultant to NASA at the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama for many years. She was a longtime communicant of Holy Name Church in Springfield.
Kathleen leaves her sister-in-law, Jean Cowles of Wilbraham; her best friend and 1st cousin, Tina Hedeen of Springfield; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. Besides her parents, Kathleen was predeceased by her brother, Peter Cowles; and her sisters; Jane Bacon, Diane Rawding, Margaret Liswell, Carol McCauley and MaryAnn Riendeau.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Name Church, 323 Dickinson Street, on Friday, May 26th at 10:00 AM with burial to follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery, 1601 State Street, both in Springfield.
