Tribute

In her 100th year, Madalyn Margaret (Caney) Fernands, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 22, 2018, in the presence of her loving family.  Madalyn was born in Springfield on August 25, 1918, the daughter of the late Richard S. and Ruth (Collins) Caney.  She was a graduate of Classical High School, Class of 1936.  As a longtime resident of the Forest Park section of Springfield, she was a member of Holy Name Parish where she was active in the Coaches Club and the Forever Young Club.  In her early years, Madalyn worked for New England Tel & Tel, and in later years and until retirement, as a mortgage and loan officer at the former Freedom Federal Savings & Loan Association. Madalyn was an avid reader, loyal library patron, and Forest Park Library volunteer.  She enjoyed many good bridge games at the Mayflower Senior Center in Springfield.  In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Paul Fernands, her brothers Richard, Loring, Charles, and James Caney, and her sister Mary Ford. She is survived by her three devoted children, Paul Fernands, Jr. and his wife Eleanor of Bradenton, FL, Mary Stratton and her husband Allen, and John Fernands and his wife Nora, all of Wilbraham , her sister Beverly Haley of Springfield, and her sisters-in-law Barbara Caney of Springfield and Frances Caney of West Springfield. She leaves her cherished grandchildren and their spouses, Jonathan and Katie Fernands, Amy and Tom Reko, Melissa Fernands, Seth and Jen Stratton, Samuel and Harmony Stratton, Amanda and Geoff Whittier,  Andrew and Jess Ethier.  She leaves her dear great grandchildren, Emily, Maddy, Maria, Grace, Marin, Nolan, Caitlin, Ian, Allie, Austin, Oscar, and A.J.   Additionally, she leaves many dear nieces and nephews.  A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at 10AM., directly at St. Cecilia’s Church 42 Main Street, Wilbraham, MA, 01095. Burial will conclude in St, Michael’s Cemetery in Springfield. Calling hours will be held on Friday, June 1, 2018 from 4PM. - 7PM at the Byron Keenan Funeral Home and Cremation Tribute Center, 1858 Allen Street, Springfield, MA, 01118. We are deeply grateful to the staff at Wingate at Hampden who with dedication and compassion, cared for Madalyn through the final years of her life.
