Tribute

Nelson Herbert Weiderman, 76, of Springfield and formerly of Wakefield, R.I., passed away on Saturday, August 21, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. Nelson was born in Jersey City, N.J., on August 13, 1945, the son of the late Herbert and Lenore (Nelson) Weiderman. As a husband, brother, father and grandfather, he lived a life rooted in quiet generosity, playful humor and wisdom.

Nelson received three degrees from Cornell University, culminating in a PhD in Computer Science, and went on to work at the University of Rhode Island from 1971 to 1985, serving as professor of computer science and director of the Academic Computing Center during his tenure. His computer expertise led him to Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute in Pittsburgh, PA. The ocean lured him back in partial retirement where he built a second-career and business, Noetic Harbor, as web designer and developer for several non-profit organizations.

His love of the ocean and avid sailing spanned decades. Considered a competitor to beat on the race course, Nelson shared his love of sailing with his wife, children and grandchildren, and many summers were enjoyed racing his J105 Kima in Block Island Race Week regattas. Nelson coached all three children in soccer and supported all their athletic endeavors.  Nelson is a past member and treasurer of the Kingston Congregational Church. Nelson was always active and a lifelong learner. He increased his extensive woodworking and photography in retirement, creating countless gifts and items that will be treasured for a lifetime. Photography took Meri and Nels on many trips throughout the world and built many new friendships. Genealogy became another hobby that Nelson devoted extensive time and network building to. He also learned to play the guitar and has passed this interest to his granddaughter.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years of marriage Meridith (Slater) Weiderman of Springfield, three devoted children Mark Weiderman of Los Angeles, CA., Gail Holt and her husband John of Longmeadow, MA, and Garth Weiderman and his wife Kelly of Templeton, MA., a caring sister Karen Funabashi of Mahwah, N.J., and seven cherished grandchildren - Grant, Cole, Rilee, Jackson, Maya, Alison and Grace.
