Sampson Robert Whitney, 82, of Springfield, has gone to rest after several years of failing health, on Monday, July 2, 2018 at Wingate at Springfield. Born in Springfield on July 11, 1935 he was a son of the late Sampson Johnson and Alphonsine Delia (Cote) Whitney. Sampson was a graduate of Springfield Technical High School and worked as a production supervisor for Spalding Sporting Goods Factory in Chicopee for over 30 years, retiring in 1996. He was a Boy Scouts Scout Master of Troop 239 in the late 70s. Sampson had several hobbies including horse racing, fishing, bowling, and cards. He was an avid Red Sox, Patriots, and other local sports teams fan. Sampson’s big adventure in life was winning a trip in 1993 to Super Bowl XXVII in Pasadena through the Springfield Newspaper’s “Beat Carlo” contest. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Jeanette (Belanger) Whitney; his son, Robert Whitney; and all of his siblings, Floyd, Barbara, June, and Richard. Sampson leaves his two sons, William Whitney and his wife Kimberly of Franklin, MA, and Matthew Whitney of Chicopee; and his two granddaughters, Alison and Jillian. A calling hour will be held on Monday, July 9, 2018 from 9:15am-10:15am at Byron Keenan Funeral Home, 1858 Allen St, Springfield followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11am in St. Patrick’s Church, Springfield. Rites of Committal will conclude in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St, Springfield, MA 01104.
