Sheila A. (Courtney) Powers, 80, a lifelong resident of the Hungry Hill Section of Springfield, passed away on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at Mercy Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Sheila was born in Springfield on August 19, 1940, the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary (Flaherty) Courtney who were both immigrants from Ireland. Sheila was a graduate of Cathedral High School. She was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Hope Church and currently a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Springfield. Sheila enjoyed playing cards, listening to Irish music and doing crossword puzzles but her greatest joy was babysitting her six adored grandchildren and spending time with family and friends. In addition to her parents she was also predeceased by her husband James Powers, and a brother Thomas Courtney and his wife the late Ann Courtney. Sheila is survived by her three devoted children Maureen Moriarty and her husband Bart of West Springfield, Eileen Merigian and her husband Michael of Feeding Hills, Michael Powers and his wife Jessica of Springfield, a sister Maureen Collins of Chicopee, and she leaves her six adored grandchildren Michael, Matthew, Nicholas, Catherine, Jack and Declan, and she leaves many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Powers’ funeral will be held on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 at 8:45a.m. from the Byron Keenan Funeral Home and Cremation Tribute Center, 1858 Allen Street, Springfield, Followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield. Burial will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Monday, July 5, 2021 from 4 p.m. - 6p.m. at the funeral home.
