Samuel Calvanese, 80, of Springfield, MA, passed away at Mercy Medical Center on Thursday, March 2^nd surrounded by family. Samuel began his career as a barber at 19 years old, and operated several successful barbershops before owning Sam’s Details in East Longmeadow. He was also involved in other  local businesses in the area including Sammi’s Soft Serve until he semi-retired and sold his building at 44 Harkness Ave. He continued working as a barber at Chippy’s Barbershop in Longmeadow until the age of 76. Sam enjoyed having coffee with friends, spending time with his family at his vacation home in Hampton, NH, and following his favorite sports teams including the NY Yankees. Sam was predeceased by his parents, Rose (Parisi) and Andrew Calvanese, his brothers, Joseph, Frank, Andrew, and Tony, his sisters Philomena “Lily” Gormally, and Gloria Hickson. He is survived by one sister, Rose Salvetti. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife of 60 years, Marilyn (Cocchi) Calvanese, his five children, Karen Calvanese Waddington, Susan Mittelman, Linda Sundry, Tina Calvanese, Samuel J. Calvanese, and 4 grandchildren, Chelsea Calvanese, Daniel Mittelman, Laura Mittelman, and Olivia Sundry. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who showed much appreciated love and support to the family. The family would like to extend special thanks to Carline Desrosiers, and Maureen Sweeney from Baystate VNA for their care and compassion throughout the last 3 years. Sam’s funeral will be held on Monday, March 6^th starting at 8:45am at Byron Keenan Funeral Home, 1858 Allen St, Springfield followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Michael’s Church, East Longmeadow. Rites of Committal will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Westfield. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, March 5^th from 4-7pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Spinal Cord Injury Support Group, care of Sharon Abdalla, 175 Carew St, Springfield, MA 01104. Checks should be made out to “Group Weldon Wheelers”.
